Manchester Direct Family Practice
24 hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
Why 24 hours?
+ more information!
When we monitor BPs for 24 hours, it turns out that what truly matters (predicts your risk of a heart attack or other bad outcome) is what your HOME blood pressures are, and what your SLEEPING blood pressures are. Those pressures cannot, by definition, be monitored in the office!
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is recommended the world over as the standard for screening for blood pressure (BP) abnormalities, intitiating treatment, and following treatment. The recommendation is also amde by the US Preventive Services Task Force (they call it the "gold standard"). But most primary care practices do not offer it.
We do. And we make it available to anyone in the community because we believe the service to not be available anywhere else in the Manchester area. We do require an appointment because we have only one cuff that can perform the test.
We will:
1. Explain the test and use of monitor to you
2. Apply the cuff and remove it the next day
3. Download and print out your report
4. Provide you with an interpretation of the report
5. We charge just $80 for the service!
Unfortunately, we cannot bill your insurance because in general they reimburse poorly, and they may not reimburse more than once per year, and if you initiate or change treatment based on the result, it is completely inappropriate to wait an entire year to assess that treatment. Another problem is that they often require a prior existence of a diagnosis of hypertension, which defeats the “screening” goal (meaning testing everyone) or extensive documentation before approving the charge.
